For New Members: Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have to miss rehearsals?

Regular attendance is a requirement for continued active status in the Chorale. It is very important to the whole group that every member is present. If you absolutely must miss a rehearsal or you will be late, please call your section leader (See names and phone numbers at left). We expect everyone to attend every rehearsal. We also expect everyone to plan time to learn the music. If you have more than 3 absences for any reason, you may be asked not to sing in the next concert. This is out of respect for your section and total group and so unfortunate solos do not happen in the performance to embarrass you!

What are the dues and music deposit?

Dues are $160 per concert year (September through May). Most people pay $80 in September and $80 in January. If necessary, installment arrangements can be made with chorale treasurer Marguerite Flick in the alto section. This will be handled

OCTOBER 2006

confidentially, but it is your responsibility to contact the treasurer so she doesn’t have to contact you. Our dues are necessary to meet our budget. They help us pay for our director, accompanist, music, section leaders, concert soloists, rehearsal hall rental and other expenses of our concerts. Dues are supplemented by concert donations and periodic fundraising, but they remain an important support of our program. We ask you to budget ahead so you are able to pay your dues promptly. Deposit for music is $10 in cash. It is returned to you when the music is returned to the Librarian.

Do I have to participate in fundraisers?

Fundraisers and other special events are planned through the season. We need your participation and welcome your suggestions. It is the only way we can continue to offer the community the low cost concerts that have been our commitment for 85 years. If you have ideas for ways we can improve, please feel free to talk to any Board member.. It is your Chorale. Your suggestions regarding fundraising are especially welcomed.

What is the dress for concerts? We have a standard concert dress for both men and women. The goal of uniform dress is to create a professional visual impression to go along with our professional sound.

Order forms and information on concert dress are available on a separate handout. We keep the same concert dress year over year so this is a one-time expense when you join the Chorale. You will not be allowed to sing in the concerts if you do not purchase the concert dress. Jewelry will be purchased as a part of the concert dress so that we look uniform and professional. For questions about the concert dress, please contact Diane Lord at 818-702-0356 or diane.lord@wellpoint.com.

During concerts, we ask that you refrain from wearing perfume, after shave, cologne or scented hairspraynasal passages and vocal cords can be irritated by fragrance, and, some people are allergic.

If you have any questions, please see any officer or your administrative section leader!

For Women Only Type of Hormone Therapy Blamed for Hearing Loss

From the Associated Press 9/05/06

Women taking certain hormone replacement therapy may damage their hearing, scientists report today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

A study of 124 post-menopausal women found that those taking hormone replacement therapy that included progestin had poorer speech understanding than women who were not taking hormones or who were using estrogen only.

The team was led by Dr. Robert D Frisina at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y. The researchers previously had reported indications of hearing problems associated with hormone therapy.

The research found problems in the inner ear and in some measures of brain function affecting hearing in women using hormone therapy with progestin, Frisina said in a telephone interview.

Since hearing problems can affect quality of life, including family and business activities, he urged more hearing tests for women using this therapy. “We feel this should be added to the list of possible side effects, so when a woman and her doctor make their decision she can weigh this,” Frisina said, adding that it may be a particular concern for women who already have some hearing loss.
